Syracuse NY Newborn Photographer | Billi B Productions | New Parents And Sleep Deprivation
According to the national sleep foundation the average adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
Surveys have found that parents with babies six months and younger, get a mere one to three hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.
Newborn babies wake anywhere from every one to three hours every night to be fed, changed and soothed. Sometimes this process can last upwards of an hour and a half. Just when you’ve put baby down, closed your eyes and and just drifted back off to sleep you hear baby cry and it is time to start the process over again. It feels like you closed your eyes just minutes ago. How could it possibly be time for them to eat agin?! Whether your baby is breastfed or bottle fed… if you are the sole nighttime caretaker of your baby or you share the responsibility with babies other parent, one thing is certain; parents of newborns are sleep deprived.
You may feel like you are navigating your days on autopilot in a fog and quite often in tears, just praying for more than an hour or two of uninterrupted sleep.
Sleep is even harder to come by, if you have a toddler at home, as well as your newborn baby.
Momma I hear you. I have been there.
Here are a few tips for the early days with your new baby:
1. Sleep when your baby sleeps. I’m sure you’ve heard this said before and it is excellent advice for parents of newborns.
2. Keep babies bassinet beside your bed. It is so much easier to feed or check on baby and place baby back in their cradle beside you and go right back to sleep. If you’re anything like me, I needed to roll over and just check that my babies were breathing so many times each night, I couldn’t imagine walking to another room to do this. Are there any other Mommas out there that have done this? I was such a worrier when they were tiny and new.
3. Ask for help. If you are blessed enough to have family or friends you are close with and that are willing to come help you in the early days with your baby, let them help you. Asking for and accepting help will only make you a better Mom in the long run. A well rested Mom is a happier Mom.
4. Forget your chores. You can catch up on them later. Now isn’t the time to be worrying about whether or not the house is dusted, or if the beds are perfectly made. Again… let others help you and get some sleep!
A typical newborn photography session can last anywhere from three to four hours. It really depends entirely on the newborn and how quickly they settle in for their session. All sessions at Billi B Productions are baby led.
I strive to create an atmosphere that is calm in my studio. A place for you to sit back, unwind and relax and hopefully take the time to nap, while my assistant and myself capture images of your newborn that you will cherish for a lifetime. I have a big comfy chaise lounge in a serene corner within eyesight and earshot of your newborn, where you can take this time for yourself, while I create beautiful art featuring your baby.
